Though, as a satire, it's meant to be funny, this book will give the average outsider a much better idea of what it's really like in graduate school. If you're thinking of getting a higher degree in biology, it's a MUST.

The Department edition by Eugene M McCarthy Literature Fiction eBooks

Dr. McCarthy, after doing us all the incredible favor of detailing the true nature of human origins, has written a wonderfully sharp critique of academic life. Now we can understand how it is that $cience has become so corrupted, so full of nonsense and sophistry, when the incentives of these people are so perverse. With Dr. McCarthy's insights, we are better able to understand the words of Dr. Richard Horton, the current editor-in-chief of the Lancet, which is considered to be one of the most well respected peer-reviewed medical journals in the world, when he stated:

“The case against science is straightforward: much of the scientific literature, perhaps half, may simply be untrue. Afflicted by studies with small sample sizes, tiny effects, invalid exploratory analyses, and flagrant conflicts of interest, together with an obsession for pursuing fashionable trends of dubious importance, science has taken a turn towards darkness.”

After reading The Department, such a statement from such a source is easy to understand and in fact may be wildly optimistic. The world makes a lot more sense after having consumed both the fictional and non-fictional work of Dr. McCarthy. It leaves one to wonder - what else have our self-appointed gurus of knowledge gotten wrong?

The Department edition by Eugene M McCarthy Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I think the book was interesting, well written but somewhat disappointing, altho that was because it is intended as a
warning for those who might try to do what the team in this book did.
The author is a real scientist who has produced a remarkable new theory of human origins which at first thought is disturbing, but when you really look into it, there are so many interesting facts involved, that you HAVE to pursue it further.
I am a convert to the theory !!
Satire, literary scholarship, comedy, investigative reporting, horror -- The Department has it all. It's Confederacy of Dunces + Frankenstein + Moby Dick rolled into one. McCarthy does a great job of populating a university genetics department with clowns, villains, heroes, mad scientists, and monsters while weaving a plot which leads inevitably to the substantial depopulation of that department. He takes a little time getting there, but it's always a pleasant, informative, and fascinating journey.
This book makes no sense, it is just a reflection of a deeply troubled and revengeful person. There are far more interesting topics to write about. Poor taste and poor judgment.
Honestly, this book was way better than I expected it to be. Though fiction, McCarthy reveals the inner workings of academia, showing the so-called intelligentsia for the very flawed human beings they really are. You'll never read another citation or read an article in a scientific journal and take it for non-biased fact again. Interspersed among the wonderful characters and insights is a horror story that, if expanded on, would have given Koontz and King a run for their money. The scary part is that it could actually happen. Hard to put down, I found myself turning pages and wanting to know what would happen next. Over way too soon.
hilarious depiction of real people under fake names in a real institution of higher learning, including the scams they pull to get money and extracurricular sexual hijinks, plus a sobering look at the very possible results of an effort to hybridize an ape and a pig, to reproduce and test a theory of human hybrid origin. first generation not quite human but can talk and think and learn like a human and very dangerous.
